When BMW announces that it has a BMW cycle to offer, it immediately makes one curious!

I had the chance to test the New Bike Generation 4 BMW cycle – The Cruise Bike, about 224km at the BMW Endurance Ride 2020, cycling from Mysore to Coimbatore. The terrain was rolling, including some downhill and village trails. The NBG IV Cruise bike is a city bike, but being hefty it can take on rugged terrain. It does not have suspension though, so don’t plan to hit technical terrain on this bike. It is 7 speed, and clearly shares its looks with the parent company – BMW.

This BMW cycle is understated and premium looking with clean lines and slick design. It has a minimal fixie look, designed by BMW’s inhouse design studio – Designworks. The front frame triangle shows off the BMW logo distinctively.

FRAME & WEIGHT

The frame is aluminium, comes in Glossy Silver/ Frozen Blue colours, comes in small, medium and large frame sizes. The fork is rigid with no suspension, this being a city bike.

In total the cycle is 13kg, the additional weight is attributed to the hub gear set up. It is a trend now to have hub gears for low maintenance.

The paint job is high-end, the joints are clean.

THE COMPONENTS

The Shimano Nexus 7 speed gears are compact, placed inside the hub, making maintenance very easy. However climbing to Ooty on a 7 speed bike (as we did) is not a good plan, one definitely needs a higher gear combination!
The hydraulic disc brakes – Shimano 180 mm and 160 mm brakes respectively at the front and back, offer powerful braking.

This BMW cycle is equipped with a black Selle Royal Freccia Black saddle which is good quality and comfortable. The rims are Rody Web 28”, black with and the bike has Continental Contact Cruiser tires. As expected, no corners have been cut by BMW in the components.

RIDING EXPERIENCE

The bike is very responsive, with a solid feel for city riding. It is a compact and good looking machine. There was no major discomfort riding on bad roads due to the 28” wheels.

It is one of the best city commute bikes I have tested. The riding position is comfortable and upright. It’s good for leisure riding, but not good for climbing or fast cycling due to its weight.

Here is what one of the other cyclists at the BMW Endurance Ride 2020, Anand Marar, had to say about the BMW cycle – NBG 4 Cruise bike:

“Great frame. Super design. Looks super hot! Admirable finish in the welded areas and the paint job. The mechanics (crank and groupset) are great for city riding and climbing flyovers. The bike has good manoeuvrability, but it is not built for serious climbing (like the Ooty one).

The Shimano Disc braking was very impressive. We had good control on the steep downhills at high speeds.

The Shimano Nexus hub gears need a bit more refinement. There was a slight lag in the shifting of the gear from the time of pressing the shifter.”

THE VERDICT

This BMW cycle sells at Rs 1 Lakh plus, a price range in which you can get more specialized cycles, that excel in being a mountain bike or a road bike. If you want a functional bike in less budget, this is not the one. It is not recommended for climbs or a highly rolling terrain due to limited gears. But if you do want a city bike, with good looks and a great brand behind it, and don’t mind the price, then this is a bike to consider, to own as a premium BMW product.
